Lingokids is a language learning app for kids between ages 2 and 6 years old aiming at school readiness.
The service is mostly game and video-based, allowing kids to become fully immersed in the language they are learning (either English or Chinese). The video and games’ difficulty will adapt to the child’s progress as they learn.
The app has a partnership with the Oxford University Press which provides about a quarter of the learning content. It also offers private online classes with native speaking tutors for a fee.
The Lingokids app won the Mom’s Choice Award in both 2014 and 2015. It is ads-free and is safe for kids to use. After downloading the app, you will be asked for your child’s name, age, and English proficiency level. This will then trigger a customized English program. You can choose any lesson you want, such as “colors,” “on the farm,” or “food.”
Lingokids offer a week-long free trial. Be aware that you will be asked your credit card details when starting the trial and that the credit card will then be charged at the end of the trial if you don’t cancel your subscription beforehand. At the end of the trial week, you will have to choose between the Basic and Premium plans.
The Basic plan is free and allows access to five lessons per day. If you want more features and content, then you would need to opt for the Premium subscription. With the premium package, you can also follow your child’s progress with a dedicated report and download the content to your device for playing offline (like during a flight). Lingokids offers multi-account support if you have more than one child.
The company behind the app also offers the Lingolive option: unlimited live tutoring via video conferencing with native English speakers in one-on-one sessions or in small groups. The tutoring sessions last 25 minutes. Lingolive starts with a free class where a tutor will evaluate your kid’s proficiency to define the best possible placement. It is available as a subscription which also includes the Premium Lingokids access.
Lingokids currently offers only English and Chinese as learning languages.
